HTC seems to be the target of companies looking for patent infringements (yes, that means you, Apple). Apparently, they have done it again, but this time there would be no gut spilling and bloodbaths over lawsuits. Due to some infringement issues from the company’s mobile devices carrying the Android OS, HTC will be paying Microsoft some royalties. As for the actual figures, that seems to be a secret between the two companies. No specific patents were mentioned in Microsoft’s press release:

The two companies signed a patent agreement covering HTC’s mobile phones running Android. Under this agreement, Microsoft will be paid royalties from HTC. When looking online for a new phone it can be a good time to compare mobile broadband deals.

The extent of the infringement may cover some of the Linux technology of the devices running the little green robot but like the financial details, the specifics were not given. The only reported fact is that all HTC smart phones running the Android OS will be covered by the deal. That includes the Google Nexus One as well. The latest new phone from HTC that may fall under this agreement is the HTC Wildfire deals that are being offered online.

According to Horacio Gutierrez, the Deputy General Counsel of Microsoft, even if they are not quick to jump the gun on lawsuits, they want to ensure that the competition do not benefit from their technology for free. It is a smart move, considering the fact that Microsoft would benefit greatly by getting royalties and keeping HTC happy. They are, after all, also a prominent manufacturer of Windows mobile phones:
